EGYPT: BROTHERHOOD MEMBER SENTENCED TO DEATH, TWO OTHER DEATH SENTENCES REFERRED TO GRAND MUFTI

May 18, 2015: A Muslim Brotherhood member was sentenced to death and three others to life for accusations of forming a "terror cell".
The Mansoura Criminal Court issued the death sentence after referring the case to the Grand Mufti in March.
Amer Mosad, 29, was convicted of killing the anti-Brotherhood businessman Mohamed Rabie in December 2013 and attempting to murder the lion-tamer Mohamed al-Essawy, who was paralyzed in the attack.
Three other Brotherhood members were sentenced to life in the case for complicity and planning to murder opponents of former President Mohamed Morsi.
The defendants also admitted to shoot at anti-Brotherhood protesters in the Delta city of Mansoura.
On the same day, in a separate case, the Cairo Criminal Court referred two defendants to Egypt's Grand Mufti to issue an opinion over sentencing them to death for establishing and joining "a terrorist cell".
One of the defendants is charged with establishing a group with the purpose of stalling the constitution, preventing state institutions from carrying out their duties, attacking citizens' personal freedoms and harming national unity.
The other defendant is accused of joining "a terrorist cell" which attempted to vandalise and bomb public buildings. He is also charged with possession of explosive devices.
According to the judge who presided over the court, the two defendants supplied other defendants with explosive devices and funds to carry out "terrorist operations" against security locations and personnel in Giza.
