UAE: DEATH SENTENCE FOR SHARJAH SUPERMARKET MURDERER

April 20, 2016: A supermarket worker who killed a payroll manager in a row over wages has been sentenced to death in the UAE.
Sharjah Sharia Court handed down the verdict to the 23-year-old Indian, who also took Dhs116,000 from him after killing the 53-year-old compatriot.
Judge Hussain Al Asoufi and Judge Mohammed Mohammed Said Ali Salem heard that the victim’s family rejected the offer of Dhs200,000 blood money, instead demanding justice for their relative.
An accepted offer of blood money usually comes with a lighter sentence for the guilty party.
Earlier, the court was told that the row started when the supermarket worker went to collect his Dhs2,000 salary. He and the victim shared an apartment in Sharjah’s Industrial Area 10.
The payroll officer said that the colleague had failed to show up for work several times that month and would be penalized financially.
The worker then got out a knife and stabbed his colleague in the chest and neck before taking the entire payroll cash.
After the killing, the defendant hid the money in a pillow.
Speaking to the court, the defendant plead guilty.
He said: “For the last seven months, he used to deduct from my salary and refused my requests for days off.
“We had many disagreements and problems. I was admitted to hospital one day before the crime and I paid Dhs500 – which he deducted from my salary.”
According to court records, the attack took place in September 2013. Judges on several occasions tried to convince the family to accept blood money, and this is the reason for the lengthy delay in sentencing.
