08 April 2021 :

Indonesia on 6 April 2021 handed death sentences to a gang of 13 drug traffickers, including an Iranian couple and a Pakistani man, the prosecutor’s office said.
Three Iranians, a Pakistani and nine Indonesians were ordered to be executed by firing squad for the gang’s role in smuggling about 400 kilograms (880 pounds) of methamphetamine, according to authorities.
The ruling was delivered by videolink late on 6 April in West Java’s Sukabumi city, where members of the drugs ring were caught last June, due to Covid-19 restrictions.
Iranian Hossein Salari Rashid led the smuggling plot, said Bambang Yunianto, head of the Sukabumi prosecutors’ office.
“There are four foreigners in the group with (Rashid) the mastermind of the crime. He was sentenced together with his wife,” Yunianto said.
This ruling was a record for the number of drug traffickers sentenced to death at one time in Indonesia, Amnesty International said.
It brought to 30 the number of people given the death penalty in the Southeast Asian nation this year, including several foreigners, the rights group said.
Most were drug trafficking cases, it added.

22 April 2021 :

The East Jakarta district court on 21 April 2021 sentenced to death six terrorists responsible for the deadly riot at a detention center outside Jakarta in May 2018. 
According to the court’s website, the six defendants accepted the verdict and have not declared an appeal.
The six terrorists on death row are Anang Rachman, Suparman alias Maher, Syawaluddin Pakpahan, Suyanto or Abu Izza, Handoko or Abu Bukhori, and Wawan Kurniawan.
The court deemed their actions to be very sadistic and inhumane.
The inmates took six police officers hostage and later killed five of them. Four other officers were also injured. That terrorism is considered in Indonesian law as an extraordinary crime. 
The riot took place in the Brimob HQ’s Block C facility on 18 May 2018.
According to the police, the riot was sparked by a dispute over food.

19 September 2021 :

Indonesian Consul General in Kuching Yonny Tri Prayitno on 8 September 2021 confirmed the consulate offered legal and repatriation assistance to Indonesian Ical Samerin, 36, whose death penalty verdict was overturned in the Court of Appeal in Miri, Sarawak.
"He was arrested by the Miri Police on 2 May 2017, on charge of murder of an Indonesian (claimed to be his wife), an offence carrying a maximum charge of death penalty in the country," Consul Prayitno noted in his written statement received by ANTARA in Pontianak, West Kalimantan.
Prayitno remarked that Samerin was earlier sentenced to death by hanging during a trial in the High Court in Miri on 20 May 2020. The Consulate General then appealed against the verdict in the Court of Appeal, with the hearing held on 23 August 2021.
"The Consulate General provides legal assistance to Samerin by appointing a lawyer for him. Through the lawyer's assistance and defence for him, the Appeal Court found him innocent and acquitted him of all charges," the consul stated.
Following the successful appeal, Samerin was transferred to an immigration depot in Bekenu, Sarawak, pending deportation to Indonesia. The immigration officials brought Samerin to the Consulate General for immigration administration procedures on 7 September 2021.

While the majority of the Indonesian people are in favor of death penalty, their support for it declines as they learn more about the scope of judicial killing or are shown with specific circumstances such as unfair trials, according to a public opinion research by Oxford University whose results were released on 30 June 2021.
There are currently more than 350 death row inmates in Indonesia, with convicted drug traffickers accounting for around 60%.
The research highlighted that the public lacked knowledge about the death penalty; only 2 percent considered themselves “very well informed”, and only 4 percent stated that they were “very concerned” about the issue.
It found that of 1,515 respondents, 69 % initially favored retention of the death penalty -- although only 35 % felt ‘strongly’ in favor of retention.
However, “when presented with realistic scenarios on the application of the death penalty, there was a dramatic decline in the public’s support for its retention,” according to Professor Carolyn Hoyle of Oxford University's The Death Penalty Research Unit.
“Of those who had initially supported retention, 70% changed their minds when shown a variety of specific circumstances where the death penalty could be applied,” she said in a statement.
Up to 1/2 of death penalty supporters agreed to change their mind under certain circumstances: the death penalty was applied unfairly (47 %), wrongful convictions occur (46 %), there was no deterrent effect (38 %), or religious leaders showed support for abolition (37 %).
The research was conducted in 2019-20 in partnership with the University of Indonesia and law firm LBH Masyarakat which provides pro bono legal services.
