ALBANIA AMENDS PENAL CODE TO SCRAP COURT MARTIAL DEATH PENALTY

Prime Minister Sali Berisha

28 March 2007 :

The Council of Ministers approved a bill to amend the Law on the Penal Military Code of the Republic of Albania.
The bill's goal is to bring this code into line with Albania's decision in 1995 to abolish the death penalty. The bill consists of five articles amending the Penal Military Code, replacing the maximum penalty of death with life imprisonment. The bill was presented by Prime Minister Sali Berisha.
"This bill brings the Penal Military Code into line with Albania's decision to abolish the death penalty and declare life as the loftiest, most supreme, and inalienable value. There was a relic in the Military Code and now we are eliminating it once and for all," he said.
