BANGLADESH: COURT SENTENCES ONE TO DEATH OVER MANIKGANJ FARMER’S MURDER

23 February 2017 :

A district court found one Nurul Islam guilty over the murder of farmer Aynal Hossain (48) in Kafatia village in Manikganj’s sadar upazila.
The verdict was announced in a crowded court by Additional District and Sessions Court Judge Al Mahmud Faizul Kabir. The three remaining defendants in the case were acquitted due to insufficient evidence. The convicted Nurul Islam (25), son of village resident Hazrat Ali, was not present at the hearing.
According to the case statement, around noon on October 3, 2008, Nurul Islam along with a few of his neighbours beat Aynal to death with an iron rod and other sharp objects. The very same day, Aynal’s father Kofiul Uddin Badi filed a case against Nurul Islam, Akkas Ali, Hazrat Ali, Shamsuddin and Bimla Khatun at the local police station.
Local police submitted a charge-sheet against the accused at the court after investigation.
Nurul Islam was found guilty following evidence and testimony presented at the trial, and sentenced to death by hanging. One of the accused, Akkas Ali, had already died before the trial was completed, and the other three were acquitted due to lack of evidence.
The prosecutors were represented by Additional PP Mathurnath Sarkar and the defendant by Advocate Anowar Hossain.
