BANGLADESH: MAN AWARDED DEATH PENALTY FOR BURNING WIFE TO DEATH

In Rangpur, a court on 29 September 2020 sentenced Mossarraf Hossain to death for burning his wife to death after failing to realise dowry from her, about 14 years back in Monthona area of Rangpur city.
The court sentenced Habibar Rahman, grandfather of Mossarraf, to life term imprisonment for assisting his grandson in the murder.
Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 judge Md Zabid Hussain handed down the verdict in a crowded courtroom in absence of Mossarraf while his grandfather was present.
The court fined both the convicts Tk 1 lakh each and issued a warrant of arrest against Mossarraf who has been absconding since committing the crime and ordered for confiscating his properties.
The prosecution said Mossarraf Hossain jointly with Habibar Rahman poured kerosene oil on his wife Marjina Khatun’s body and started fire at 8:30pm on 15 October 2006 at home.
Neighbours took Marjina to the burn unit of Rangpur Medical College Hospital.
The victim told police and physicians that her husband and grandfather-in-law put her on fire after spraying kerosene oil. She died at the hospital after 2 days.
Rafiqul Islam, elder brother of the deceased, filed a case in this connection and police submitted charge-sheet against them.
After examining 11 witnesses of the case during the long hearing period, the court found the accused persons guilty and pronounced the verdict on 29 September 2020.
