In an online conference, the judiciary’s spokesperson revealed that the death sentence of the AmadNews Telegram channel director, Ruhollah Zam, has been upheld by the Supreme Court.
According to state-run news agency ISNA, in an online conference held today, judiciary spokesperson Gholamhossein Esmaili confirmed that Ruhollah Zam’s death sentence had been upheld by the Supreme Court.
Esmaili explained: “The Supreme Court examined the case more than a month ago and the verdict issued in this case was upheld by the Supreme Court.”
In June, the judiciary’s Mizan Online reported that the final hearing of Ruhollah Zam’s trial was held on June 9, 2020 when he pleaded guilty to charges of “insulting government officials and inciting people to riot", "supporting those convicted on security grounds in Iran" and the "publication of lies." Other charges including "widespread involvement in creating combustion, destruction and disruption of the economic system" and "action against the internal and external security of the Islamic Republic" were also brought against the political activist.
In July, Mizan Online revealed that the preliminary court had found Zam guilty and quoted judiciary spokesperson, Gholamhossein Esmaili as stating that "the court has considered 13 counts of charges against Ruhollah Zam as instances of corruption on earth and sentenced him to death."
Ruhollah Zam, whose Telegram channel had over a million viewership at its peak, has refugee status and a residence permit in France. He was arrested during a trip to Iraq in October 2019 and subsequently transferred to Iran.
A day after the Revolutionary Guards announced news of Ruhollah Zam's arrest, the French newspaper, Le Figaro reported that Mr Zam had been lured to visit Baghdad under the pretext of meeting Ayatollah Ali Sistani, Iraq's Shiite leader in Najaf, where he was arrested.
