IRAQ. D'ELIA: ANOTHER CONTRIBUTION TO THE ESCALATION OF VIOLENCE, UN MORATORIUM NEEDED IMMEDIATELY

15 January 2007 :

Sergio D'Elia, Secretary of Hands Off Cain and a Rosa nel Pugno Party parliamentarian, responded to the execution of the other two Iraqi ex-top aides by saying "the execution of Saddam Hussein, has contributed to the escalation of violence in Iraq. Thanks to Al Maliki!" D'Elia said the need for a UN moratorium on capital executions is more and more urgent.
He argued it would avoid the current situation in Iraq and elsewhere causing more bloodshed, deaths and death sentences. It would also avoid an overall spiral of violence and war that could turn into a generalised confict of enormous consequence.
D'Elia thanked the President of the Republic,  the President of the Council and the Foreign Ministry, and "nearly all political leaders, including the opposition leader". "We appreciate that thanks to their commitment and support, it is realisitic to hope that this week we can reach our objective: the UN moratorium. Hands Off Cain and the Transnational Radical Party have been supporting this moratorium for fourteen years."
