SAUDI ARABIA. WIDOW GIVES BIRTH, JUDGE WANTS HER STONED TO DEATH

21 November 2006 :

a 39 year old widow was sentenced to be stoned to death in the Saudi city of Hail, the local al-Watan daily reported.
The woman had given birth to a boy six years after the death of her husband. As she was not married, the judge ruled her pregnancy to be illegal.
Convinced she has committed a grave crime, the woman has decided not present any appeals in order to “purify her soul and attain paradise.”
According to the country’s laws, the crime consisted in having sexual relations outside of wedlock.
However, in her specific case, she would not have been able to marry due to the fact that she has no senior male relative (father, older brother, cousin) available to sign any eventual matrimonial contract.
The woman of foreign origin had attained Saudi citizenship 18 years back and had three children from her deceased husband.
The daily reported her neighbours as saying that after the death of her husband she lived in poverty in a mud hut next to the mosque donated to her by a local benefactor.
