YEMENI COURT SENTENCES ISLAMIST TO DEATH, JAILS 25

24 November 2006 :

a Yemeni court sentenced an Islamist to death and jailed another 25 for up to 11 years for plotting to assassinate officials and carry out attacks in the Gulf Arab country.
The court said the Islamists were all followers of the hardline cleric Badr el-Deen al-Houthi, a member of the Zaidi tribe involved in the abductions of foreign tourists in Yemen earlier in the year. . Judge Najib al-Qadri said Ibrahim Sharafeddine would face execution after he was convicted of leading a gang that planned to assassinate officials and hit "vital sites" in the country. He did not say which sites or officials were targeted.
