AFRICAN COURT ON HUMAN AND PEOPLES' RIGHTS AGAIN ORDERS TANZANIA TO ABOLISH MANDATORY DEATH PENALTY

The African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights in Arusha

09 June 2026 :

On June 5, 2026, the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights again ordered Tanzania to abolish the mandatory death penalty and hanging for defendants convicted of murder, calling these practices contrary to fundamental human rights.
The African Court's ruling requires the government to reform the Penal Code, review the appellants' death sentences, and remove the death penalty as the mandatory penalty for murder.
The ruling, which was issued by an eight-judge panel led by President Blaise Tchikaya and Vice-President Chafika Bensaoula, arose from three separate cases involving seven death row inmates convicted of murder.
