a military court in Herat City in western Afghanistan condemned two soldiers to death for killing two civilians. Colonel Abdul Basir Mobin, advisor to of the 207th Zafar Corps Military Corps, told Pajhwok Afghan News the soldiers were convicted of extorting money from passengers and killing two civilians in the Ghor province three years back.A third man was imprisoned for four years for failing to prevent his colleagues from committing the crime.
Gen. Abdul Wasi, chief judge of the court, identified the convicts as Zalmay from Herat and Mahmudullah from Logar. The soldiers killed the civilians in Dar-i-Ghazi area of Chaghcharan, capital of the Ghor province.
The soldiers were punished under Clause 3 of Article 395 of the Punishment Law. Wasi explained that the primary court in Ghor that tried the case in 2004 had no jurisdiction to adjudicate on military matters, meaning the military tribunal had to try the case afresh.
