Authorities in Bahrain say an appeal by two men sentenced to death over the bombing that killed a police officer in 2014 has been rejected.Prosecutor Nayyaf Yusuf announced the Court of Cassation's decision on Monday (November 16).
Defense lawyer Mohammed al-Tajir told The Associated Press that King Hamad now must decide whether the death sentences should be carried out over the attack in al-Dair, northeast of the capital, Manama.
Al-Tajir said defendants Hassan Mosa and Mohammed Ramadan were among 12 charged in the case. Another defendant received a life sentence, while the rest received six-year prison sentences and fines.
The Gulf island nation of Bahrain has experience continuing unrest since 2011, when its Shiite majority demanded more rights from the Sunni monarchy. Bahrain is home to the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet.
