BANGLADESH: 1 SENTENCED TO DEATH FOR RAPE, MURDER

A Dhaka court has sentenced a man to death in a case filed for raping and murdering his sister-in-law nine years ago.
Dhaka Women and Child Oppression Prevention Tribunal 5 Judge Tanjina Ismail gave the verdict in the afternoon.
The court also sentenced the death row convict, Md Alamgir, to 14 years imprisonment in another section. He was fined Tk1 lakh, and if he fails to pay the amount, he will have to serve two more years in jail.
The court found Alamgir's friends, Rahid Hassan Milon and Ripon, guiding of the crime, and sentenced them to 14 years in jail.
They were fined Tk20,000 each, and failure to pay would lead to another year of imprisonment.
Of the convicts, Milon is absconding.
Alamgir and his friends kidnapped his sister-in-law, Shumi Akter, when she was going to a hospital for check-ups on July 14, 2006.
Later, they gang-raped her, and dumped the body in Ichhamati river after slaughtering her.
Her body was found far from the river after four days of her kidnapping.
