A Dhaka court on 16 February 2022 sentenced four people to death in a case filed over for the murder of a garment factory in Ashulia in July 2017.
The convicts are garment workers Sohel Rana, Farhad Hossain, Md Ashiqur Rahman, and Md Nazrul Islam.
Judge Ismat Jahan of Dhaka Second Additional District and Sessions Judge's Court handed down the sentence in presence of the convicts in the courtroom, according to court sources.
According to the case documents, Md Tanim, a machine operator went missing around 9:00 am on 22 July 2017. His body was found in the jungle near Khagan Village in Ashulia three days later.
Police, who had not identified him at the time, filed an unnatural death case over the incident.
On 10 Aug the same year, Tanim's wife Nurunnahar filed a general diary as her husband had been missing for some time.
Tanim's mother, unaware of her son's whereabouts, filed a case against Sohel for kidnapping and demanding Tk 40,000 as ransom.
The convicts had recorded Tanim's voice on a mobile phone and used the recording to demand money through bKash, said his mother Syeda Sultana.
The entire matter came to light during the investigation and Sohel gave a confessional statement during which he explained the motive for the crime and named his accomplices.
The suspects in the case were indicted on 5 November 2018.
