BANGLADESH: 5 SENTENCED TO DEATH FOR KILLING WOMAN IN MADARIPUR

A Madaripur court on 24 January 2022 sentenced five people to death for killing a housewife at the Rajoir upazila of the district in 2002.
Lailatul Ferdous, judge of the Madaripur Additional and Session Judge's Court, passed the order in presence of four accused as another accused remains absconding since the murder, Public Prosecutor Siddiqur Rahman said.
"The court also fined the five convicts Tk 50,000 each," said the PP.
The convicts are Ashok Baidya, Noren Bairagai, Kalu Bishwas, Toruni Baidya and Bijoy Bepari. Of them, Bijoy Bepari is absconding since the murder.  
The PP told this correspondent that Radha Rani Baidya, wife of Gurupod Badiya of Amgram area of the upazila was abducted on 14 October 2002 over a land-related dispute. Later, the victim's son Bisnapad filed a kidnapping case against six people at the Rajoir Police Station.
Police recovered Radha's body from the Pakhulla Beel 11 days after her abduction.
"Police on 30 April 2003, submitted a charge sheet to a district against the six accused on charge of killing the woman and later arrested them from various areas," said PP Siddiqur. "Of the six accused, Gourango Baidya died during the trial proceedings. After examining 11 witnesses and documents, the court handed down the verdict today," he added.
