International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) 1 sentenced fugitive MA Zahid Hossain to death on six charges of crimes against humanity committed in Faridpur during the Liberation War in 1971.International Crimes Tribunal-1 found Zahid guilty in total 10 out of 11 charges brought against him.
Zahid Hossain, also the Faridpur Nagarkanda municipality mayor and Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader, was awarded different terms of imprisonment in four other charges.
He had been acquitted of single charge as allegation brought against him was not proved.
The three-member International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) 1, led by Justice Inayetur Rahim, announced the verdict.
Earlier on 17 April, the tribunal kept the verdict date on Case Awaiting Verdict (CAV).
On 23 June 2013, the prosecution submitted to the tribunal formal war crimes charges against the incumbent Nagarkanda municipality mayor and produced 24 prosecution witnesses to prove the charges made against the accused.
Advocate Mukhlesur Rahman conducted the case for the prosecution while A Shukur Khan for the fugitive accused as state defence counsel.
