BANGLADESH: MAN SENTENCED TO DEATH IN CHATTOGRAM FOR KILLING PREGNANT WIFE OVER DOWRY

A Chattogram court on February 3, 2025 sentenced a man to death for killing his wife, who was pregnant at the time, over conflict centring dowry.
Judge Ferdous Ara of Chattogram Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-7 passed the verdict. 
The convict Md Suman (35), has also been fined Tk3 lakh.
Suman, a resident of Mirzahat area in Bhujpur, Fatikchhari, was present in court during the verdict.
Kofil Uddin, bench assistant of the court, confirmed the verdict saying that the court delivered the death penalty after finding Suman guilty of murdering his eight-month pregnant wife, Moni Akter. 
The judgment came after testimonies from 13 witnesses. Following which, the convict was sent to prison.
According to the case documents, Suman married Moni Akter concealing information regarding his previous marriages.
After their wedding, he tortured her by pressuring her for dowry. 
On 31 October 2021, Moni, who was eight months pregnant then, moved to her parental home in Bhujpur. Suman continued demanding dowry from his in-laws as well.
When Moni's family refused to meet his demands, Suman physically assaulted her. She was later admitted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) in critical condition, where Suman abandoned her and fled. 
After 26 days of treatment, Moni succumbed to her injuries on 25 November 2021.
Following her death, Moni's brother, Md Abbas, filed a case two days later.
