BANGLADESH: THREE SENTENCED TO DEATH FOR KILLING FREEDOM FIGHTER

A Kushtia court convicted three people and sentenced them to death for killing freedom fighter Khabbir Uddin.
The convicts are Abdus Salam 31, Jamil Mondol, 41, Abdul Hamid Malikh, 41.
Additional Sessions Judge Reja Mahmud Alamgir handed down the verdict in the morning.
Public Prosecutor Anup Kumar Nandi said Salam, Jamil and Hamid of Goal village under the Daulatpur upazila were neighbours of Khabbir who called him out on February 7, 2012, before allegedly killing him.
Khabbir’s body was discovered in Bichar field by locals the next morning, who informed police.
After recovering the body from the field, police sent it to Sadar hospital where postmortem examination found that Khabbir had been strangled.
Urjina Begum, wife of the deceased, had filed a case with Daulatpur police station against the three in connection with the murder, all of whom were later arrested.
After examining the evidence and witness statements, the judge handed down the death penalty verdict in the presence of the convicts.
