"The abolition of the death penalty in Nebraska has a great political, legal and humanitarian value, because Nebraska is the first American state with a Republican majority to abolish the death penalty in the modern era," said Secretary of Hands off Cain Sergio D'Elia after yesterday’s massive vote of Nebraska's unicameral parliament."Furthermore - continued D'Elia - this abolition is proof of an increasingly widespread resistance in America against a cruel and unusual practice that puts the oldest democracy at the level of the worst illiberal and executionist countries in the world".
Although the Republican Governor Pete Ricketts has announced the veto, the parliamentary vote of 32 against 15 makes us believe that the veto will be overcome by a new parliamentary vote.
Thus, Nebraska will join the other 19 abolitionist states, not counting states such as Oregon, Colorado, Washington and Pennsylvania that have suspended executions because of the obvious flaws that characterize the capital system.
