EGYPT: HANDS OFF CAIN, DEATH SENTENCE OF MORSI POLITICALLY MOTIVATED AND FURTHER PROOF OF A WORRYING INVOLUTION OF EGYPTIAN MILITARY REGIME

Ousted president Mohamed Morsi

19 May 2015 :

On the sentencing to death of former President Morsi, Secretary of Hands Off Cain, Sergio D'Elia, said:
"The death sentence of former President Morsi, the latest in a long line of hundreds in the last year have been imposed on members of the Muslim Brotherhood, including the Spiritual Guide Mohamed Badie, clearly appears as politically motivated. It is also beyond the minimum standards of the rule of law and guarantees of fair trial internationally recognized and binding Egypt itself.
The fact that this latest death sentence, issued at the end of another mass trial, is only a preliminary ruling that it is easy to predict will not meet the approval of the Grand Mufti of Al-Azhar, does not detract from its seriousness, because it is proof of an alarming decline of the Egyptian military regime.
A regime that reached its peak in February, when Egyptian President al-Sisi has officially signed an anti-terrorism law, which confers on the government more powers, so extraordinary and unprecedented in the history of Egypt, that make us regret the era of Hosni Mubarak, who had never ventured that much to stifle dissent.
