the European Union has welcomed Kyrgyzstan's decision to prolong its moratorium on the death penalty."The European Union is prepared to support Kyrgyzstan in its efforts aimed at abolishing capital punishment and continues to offer its help in reforming the corresponding legislation," the European Union said in a release distributed by the German Embassy in Bishkek.
The unlimited prolongation of the moratorium is a decisive step towards the full abolishment of death penalty, the document said. On December 29, 2005, Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev extended the moratorium on capital punishment to cover 2006.
