GHANA: FISHERMAN SENTENCED TO DEATH BY HANGING

01 August 2014 :

In Ghana, a Cape Coast High Court has sentenced a fisherman to death by hanging for setting ablaze five children resulting in the death of one.
The fisherman, Kwabena Amakye, a native of Moree in the Central Region was also sentenced to a three year prison term for the burns the other four children received.
The facts of the case as presented to the court revealed that on 21ST April, 2012, Kwabena Amakye was at home resting after a long day of fishing when he heard some children making noise outside his window.
When vehement caution from him failed to get the children to leave the area in question, he decided to find a way to scare them away.
According to the facts, Amakye went into his room and picked a container of premix fuel, got some cement papers which he set on fire and threw both on the children.
The fire that was sparked caused the children severe burns leading to the demise of one of them, Kweku Mensah, with the others being severely injured.
Amakye was subsequently arrested and brought before the Cape Coast High Court for prosecution after a complaint was lodged with the police.
