INDIA: FATHER-SON DUO SENTENCED TO DEATH FOR KILLING RELATIVE IN 2014 LAND DISPUTE CASE

31 December 2024 :

A Bareilly court on December 24, 2024 sentenced a father-son duo to death in connection with a decade-old murder case, also imposing a fine of Rs 1 lakh on each.
Sessions Judge (Fast-Track Court) Ravi Kumar Diwakar pronounced the capital punishment for Raghuveer Singh and his son, Monu alias Tejpal Singh, for the murder of Raghuveer’s brother, Charan Singh, on November 20, 2014, in Baheri over a land dispute.
“They will be hanged by the neck till they are dead,” the judge declared in his order, as PTI reported.
The prosecution, represented by assistant government counsel Digambar Singh, revealed that Monu first shot Charan in the chest before Raghuveer hacked him with a weapon. The post-mortem report highlighted the extent of brutality involved in the crime. Additionally, Monu received a separate five-year prison sentence under the Arms Act, along with a Rs 10,000 fine.
In a verdict drawing on values from the Ramayana, Judge Diwakar lamented the erosion of familial bonds. He referred to Bharat’s selflessness in refusing the throne after Lord Ram’s exile, citing it as a model of brotherly love. “You, Raghuveer, have violated the sanctity of brotherhood by killing your sibling,” the judge said.
He emphasised the court’s role in upholding justice, truth, and dignity, stating, “The Ramayana teaches us the importance of respecting family and societal values. When a person violates this dignity, they deserve the severest punishment.” Highlighting the contrast between ancient ideals and modern realities, he concluded that such crimes demand the court’s firm action to preserve justice and societal harmony.
