10 July 2017 :
India's new anti-hijacking law that entails capital punishment for the perpetrators in case of death of any person, has come into force.
The stringent Anti-Hijacking Act, 2016, which was passed last year, actually replaces an old law enacted in 1982, which prescribed the trial of hijackers only in case of death of hostages.
According to the new law, death penalty will be given to hijackers in case of death of any one while in other cases, the guilty will be punished with life in jail as well as fine.
The new law also gives the Indian government the right to seize the moveable and immoveable property of hijackers.
In fact, the Indian government felt the need for including death penalty in the act after the hijacking of an Indian flight in December, 1999, which was taken to Afghanistan.
The bill to replace the old anti-hijacking law was passed by the Indian Parliament last year, and subsequently signed into law by Indian President Pranab Mukherjee.
