INDIA: THREE GET CAPITAL PUNISHMENT FOR MURDERING FIVE IN SINDHANUR

The murder of five individuals of a family in Sindhanur town (Karnataka state) in July 2020 has ended with capital punishment for three accused in the case.
III Additional District and Sessions Judge in Sindhanur of Raichur district B.B. Jakati on April 8, 2025 passed the death sentence against the three accused and also sentenced nine other accused to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of five individuals of a family in Sindhanur town in Raichur district over a love marriage. The charge made by the prosecution against the 12 accused, Sanna Pakirappa, Amanna alias Ambanna, Somshekhar, Rekha alias Siddamma, Gangamma, Dodda Pakirappa, Hanumanth, Honnurappa, Basalingappa, Amaresh, Shivaraj and Parasappa, that they murdered five members of another family, Erappa, Sumitramma, Nagaraj, Hanumesh and Sridevi, and also that they made an attempt to murder Revathi and Tayamma, daughter in-law and daughter of Erappa, was proved before court.
The accused attacked the victims with a lethal weapon on July 11, 2020. Four victims, Sumitramma, Nagaraj, Hanumesh and Sridevi, died on the spot, while Erappa died on his way to hospital.
The judge passed the death sentence against Sanna Pakirappa, Ammanna alias Ambanna and Somashekhar, who are accused number 1, 2 and 3, and imposed a fine of ₹47,000 each on them. He sentenced accused number 4 to 12 to life imprisonment, imposed a fine of ₹97,500 each on them for participating in unlawful assembly to induce the accused in carrying out the crime and involving themselves in the offence.
The death sentence passed against accused 1 to 3 is subject to confirmation by the High Court as per the provision of the Criminal Procedure Code.
Earlier, a love marriage between Mounesh, son of Erappa, and Manjula, daughter of Sanna Pakirappa, resulted in the crime, as the couple got married against the wish of the girl’s family. Since the time of the marriage, rivalry developed between the two families and resulted in the crime.
