IRAN - Behrouz Ehsani and Mehdi Hassani at imminent risk of execution

IRAN - Behrooz Ehsani and Mehdi Hasani

25 February 2025 :

February 24, 2025 - IRAN. Branch 39 of the Supreme Court has rejected the retrial request of political prisoners, Behrouz Ehsani and Mehdi Hassani, who had been sentenced to death on charges of baghy (armed rebellion), moharebeh (enmity against God), efsad-fil-arz (corruption on earth) through membership in the People's Mojahedin Organisation of Iran, collecting classified information.
Expressing serious concern over the possibility of their executions, IHR considers the issuance and implementation of death sentences as part of the Islamic Republic’s policy of spreading fear. The organisation calls on Iranian civil society, human rights institutions, and the international community to intensify efforts to abolish the death penalty and end executions in Iran.
According to Mehdi Hassani’s daughter, Maryam Hassani, her father’s appeal has been rejected by Branch 39 of the Supreme Court. HRANA news agency has reported that Behrouz Ehsani’s appeal was also rejected.
Behrouz and Mehdi were sentenced to death for charges of baghy (armed rebellion) and moharebeh (enmity against god) through “membership in Mojahedin Organisation and collecting classified information” by Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court. They were notified that their sentence had been upheld by the Supreme Court in early January. They were transferred from Evin to Ghezelhesar Prison on 26 January, creating fears of their imminent execution. At the time, their lawyers said they had appealed the decision which temporarily halted their execution.
Behrouz and Mehdi were members of the “No Death Penalty Tuesdays” abolitionist campaign when they received the death penalty themselves in the 34th week of the campaign. In a Twitter (X) space hosted by IHRNGO to mark the first year anniversary of the movement, Maryam Hassani spoke about the torture her father was subjected to in order to extract false self-incriminating confessions.
