June 11, 2025 - IRAN. Protester Mojahed Kourkour Hanged in Ahvaz on June 11

State media reported the execution of “Woman, Life, Freedom” protester, Mojahed Kourkour in Ahvaz Central Prison.

Condemning his execution in the strongest terms, Iran Human Rights once again warns of hundreds others being hanged in the coming weeks if the Islamic Republic’s actions are not met with appropriate reaction by the international community.

IHR Director, Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam said: “The Islamic Republic executed Mojahed Kourkour this morning. He was arrested during the ‘Woman, Life, Freedom’ protests, and the Islamic Republic authorities attempted to blame him for the murder of 10-year old Kian Pirfalak by forcing confessions under torture. He was sentenced to death without a fair trial and without access to a lawyer of his choice, and he was executed this morning.”

He continued: “Khamenei and the leaders of the Islamic Republic must be held accountable for the extrajudicial killing of Mojahed Kourkour, as well as for the murders of Kian Piroflak and thousands of other innocent people. The international community must break its silence in the face of this tsunami of executions carried out by the Islamic Republic. When executions occur every six hours and the world remains silent, the Islamic Republic authorities escalate their repression by carrying out more executions of protesters. Iranians must intensify their protests against the death penalty to increase the cost of these extrajudicial killings and hold the authorities accountable.”

According to the judiciary’s Mizan news agency, Mojahed Kourkour (Abbas Kourkouri) was hanged in Ahvaz Central Prison on 11 June 2025. Arrested during the “Woman, Life, Freedom” protests in 2022, Mojahed was sentenced to death by the Ahvaz Revolutionary Court on charges of “moharebeh (enmity against god) through drawing a weapon with the intention to kill people and create fear, efsad-fil-arz (corruption on earth) committed through firing a war weapon, disrupting public order, causing harm to physical integrity of seven people including Kian Pirfalak, causing major damage to public and private property, forming a baghy group and its membership through armed rebellion against the government (baghy/armed rebellion)” on 7 April 2023.

Mojahed was denied the right to be represented by his own lawyer at trial. His sentence was upheld by the Supreme Court on 24 December of the same year but was later overturned after an Article 477 (judicial review) appeal and his case referred to a court of equal standing.  Mojahed was resentenced to death by the Ahvaz Revolutionary Court in December 2024.

He was also indicted for murder (qisas/retribution-in-kind) by the Criminal Court but nothing further was reported on the case after Kian Pirfalak’s parents, uncle and lawyer stated his murder was carried out by security forces and they had no complaints against Mojahed Kourkour.

Mojahed Kourkour (Abbas Kourkouri) was a Bakhtiari protester arrested on 20 December 2022 after being shot in the leg. He was denied medical treatment beyond the removal of the bullet and forced to confess to killing 10-year-old Kian Pirfalak who was killed by security forces in Izeh on 17 November while injured and after being subjected to torture. His forced confessions were aired prior to any legal proceedings. Multiple witnesses testified that Mojahed Kourkour was not at the protest in Izeh that day. His torture-tainted confessions were aired again with the announcement of his execution.
