December 16, 2024 - IRAN. Saman Mohammadi Khiareh (Khiyareh) at Imminent Risk of Execution
Kurdish political prisoner
At this point, only raising the political cost of his execution, through backlash from the international community and civil society can save Saman's life.
Saman Mohammadi Khiareh, a Kurdish political prisoner on death row for “moharebeh (enmity against god) through membership in a group opposed to the system and ties to foreign services,” has been transferred to the pre-execution solitary confinement cells of Ghezelhesar Prison and is scheduled to be executed on Wednesday, 18 December.
Iran Human Rights calls on Iranian civil society inside and outside Iran and the international community, to do everything in their power to save Saman Mohammadi Khiareh’s life.
IHR Director, Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam said: “Saman Mohammadi Khiareh was sentenced to death without due process and fair trial rights, based on torture-tainted confessions. At this point, only raising the political cost of his execution, through backlash from the international community and civil society can save Saman's life.”
According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, Saman Mohammadi Khiareh, a 35-year-old Kurdish political prisoner, has been transferred to solitary confinement in preparation for his execution in Ghezelhesar Prison.
Saman was arrested in the aftermath of the 2009 nationwide protests when he was 19 years old and transferred to the Ministry of Intelligence’s detention centre. He was sentenced to death for charges of “moharebeh through membership in a group opposed to the system and ties to foreign services” by Branch 15 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court presided over by “Death Judge” Salavati.
According to informed IHR sources, Saman was subjected to severe physical and mental torture to force him into making false self-incriminating confessions.
He was coerced into taking responsibility for the killing of Khalifeh Ebrahim Farhadi in Qorveh, as well as the murder of a military officer in Sanandaj during the 2009 protests.
He later stated in court that he had confessed under torture and his death sentence was overturned by Branch 41 of the Supreme Court and subsequently commuted to a 15 year prison term for membership of opposition groups, which he had also confessed to under torture.
However, the sentence was again overturned with interference from security agencies. Saman was resentenced to death in an eight minute trial without a lawyer of his choice to defend him.
After 15 years on death row, Saman’s family were notified that his execution is scheduled for Wednesday morning, and they have already said goodbye in the last visit.
