27 March 2017 :
An Iraqi criminal court has sentenced a man to death on terrorism charges over links to secretive Islamic State (ISIS) hacking programs.
The spokesman of the Supreme Judicial Council, Judge Abdul Sattar Birqdar, said that "the defendant was cooperating with his partners from Arab countries,” to hack integral websites.
"All the evidence was sufficient to convict the defendant and sentence him to death according to the anti-terrorism law," he said.
The man was convicted during a trial by the Central Criminal Court in Baghdad, and has become the first person convicted and sentenced for such charges.
There are no clear statistics around the number of online social media accounts that have pledged allegiance to ISIS, but the organization uses social media under pseudonym names on both Facebook and Twitter.
