20 October 2006 :
Elisabetta Zamparutti, responsible for Hands Off Cain’s UN based initiatives, replies to Undersecretary Vernetti’s comments defining as “adventurous” the presentation of a pro-moratorium resolution at the ongoing UN General Assembly.“Support for victory at the UN General Assembly is all there and the government, like the European Union, has been aware of this for years.
The resolution would pass with between 97 to 105 votes in favour, 61 to 68 against and 19 to 27 abstentions. From the beginning, the resolution could have the co-sponsorship of 92 states, which are those that throughout the years have done so at the Commission on Human Rights in Geneva, where a pro-moratorium resolution has been uninterruptedly approved by an absolute majority from 1997 to 2005.
Therefore there are no alibis and the government must do only one thing: respect the unanimous will of the Parliament and present right away a pro moratorium resolution at the General Assembly in New York.”
