07 August 2019 :
The Court of Cassation has upheld a January Criminal Court ruling, sentencing a 24-year-old man to death after convicting him of robbing and murdering a man in Amman in April 2014, The Jordan Times reported on 6 August 2019.
The court declared the defendant guilty of the premeditated murder of the 24-year-old victim by suffocating him while at an apartment in Qweismeh neighbourhood on 29 April, and handed him the death penalty.
Two other defendants, who were standing trial on the same charges and received the death penalty, had their sentences upheld by the Court of Cassation earlier this year.
The Cassation Court ruled that the Criminal Court’s judgement fell within the law, that the proceedings were proper and the sentence given was satisfactory.
"The victim's mother refused to drop charges against the defendant and therefore, the verdict remains the same for the defendant," the higher court ruled.
The Cassation Court tribunal comprised judges Mohammad Ibrahim, Yassin Abdullat, Nayef Samarat, Naji Zu’bi and Majid Azab.
