Giovanni Lo Porto, who was an hostage, was killed together with another hostage, an American citizen, and an Al Qaeda leader, an American citizen as well.About the news of the death of the Italian cooperant Giovanni Lo Porto, who was killed in January by a CIA drone, Sergio D'Elia, Secretary of Hands Off Cain said:
"We can not consider the incident as a mere side-effect of a cause that is just and inevitable. Nor can we accept that, in the name of the world war on terrorism, the president of one of the oldest democracies in the world can, by decree, declare someone guilty after a secret trial for the mere suspicion that he intends to commit a crime in the future. This way, American citizens abroad can be killed for the mere suspicion of anti-American activities, but if they were to be caught at home they would be entitled to a trial with all the due guarantees, even those provided by the archaic system of capital punishment.
We warn therefore against the use of armed drones - concluded d'Elia - because like any other weapon the drones should be subject to both the internal and the international law, including the international humanitarian law, to regulate their use."
