MALAYSIA: CHINESE NATIONAL SENTENCED TO DEATH FOR TRAFFICKING IN SYABU

A Chinese national was sentenced to death by hanging after she was found guilty of trafficking drugs into Malaysia over a year ago.
“Upon consideration of all evidence adduced, the court finds the prosecution has established a case beyond reasonable doubt.
“Therefore, the accused is found guilty and shall be punished to death by hanging,” said High Court Justice Datuk Nurchaya Arshad in handing down the sentence on Lan Yi Ling.
The 35-year-old accused was in tears after learning the verdict through the help of a translator.
Lan was arrested on Aug 17 last year at 6.30pm upon arrival at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport and was charged under Section 39 (B) (1) (a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act after she was found with 336g of syabu.
According to the facts the case, she was doing an African friend, whom she befriended online, a favour to send a package of women’s accessories and clothing to his brother in Kuala Lumpur.
She boarded the transit flight to Kuala Lumpur from China, and upon arriving here, she was caught with the drugs after the box was scanned by a Customs officer while she was asking for help to go around the airport.
