A 22-year-old man was sentenced to death for trafficking in 749.4 gm of syabu (methamphetamine).
Justice Datuk Nurchaya Hj Arshad handed down the sentence to Lim Cheng Yung after finding him guilty as charged under Section 39B (1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 (Act 234). The indictment carries the mandatory death sentence, upon conviction.
She held that the prosecution had successfully proven the case beyond reasonable doubt against the accused.
Therefore, she convicted the accused and sentenced him to death by hanging from the neck until death.
Lim was detained in the arrival hall 2 at Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) at 2.50 pm on May 19, 2016.
The prosecution called six witnesses to testify during the trial while the accused was the sole defence witness during the trial, which commenced on July 10.
Deputy public prosecutor from the Customs Department, Nazir Amir Johari, prosecuted while counsel Ram Singh defended Lim.
