11 May 2007 :
“Yesterday’s ‘rumours’ originated from diplomatic sources in Brussels who confirmed that the EU Presidency intended to postpone all possible decisions until June. This passes the baton to the Portuguese President and makes the presentation of the Resolution on the Moratorium to the current General Assembly impossible.”So begins the joint declaration of Sergio D’Elia, Secretary of Hands Off Cain, and Matteo Mecacci, the Transnational Radical Party’s UN Representative. “On April 23, at the end of the EU General Affairs and External Relations Council, the Minister of Foreign Affairs declared that ‘we will decide together with the EU at the next Ministers’ council in May. If the EU doesn’t reach a decision, we will proceed autonomously on the basis of a coalition of the willing.’
At this point, the politically urgent act is to immediately announce, at least before Monday, that Italy has a Resolution text ready. This could be co-sponsored by a ‘Global Coalition’ of representative countries from all continents, and be presented to the current session of the General Assembly, without the consensus of the EU as such.
The behaviour of the German President of the EU, which violates the mandate given by both the European and Italian Parliaments, is no longer acceptable. Neither is this umpteenth postponement that, as has happened for the past 13 years, impedes the UN from pronouncing and reaching a historic objective for the development of international and human rights.”
