An Ekiti State High Court sitting in Ado Ekiti, on 24 November 2020 sentenced two persons, Adekunle Osho, 31, and Chinedu Ugwu, 34, to death by hanging for armed robbery.
The duo were convicted for dispossessing one Chief Ojo Gbenga of his Toyota Camry car and N150,000 in 2014.
Justice Adekunle Adeleye, in his judgment, said the convicts were actively involved in robbery and were linked with the stolen vehicle and cash.
“In the consideration of the above, the defendants are guilty as charged and hereby sentenced to death by hanging,” Justice Adeleye said.
According to the charge sheet, the offences were committed on or about 14 November 2014 at Oke Ila, Tinuola area, off Afao Road, Ado Ekiti, when they dispossessed one Chief Ojo Gbenga of his Toyota Camry car valued at N3.3mn and the sum of N150,000.
It stated that as of the time of the incident, Osho and Ugwu were armed with guns, an offence punishable under Section 1(2) of the Robbery and Firearm (Special Provision) Act, Cap R11, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
The victim had in his statement before the police stated, “On that fateful day, I was on my way home and on getting to a bump along the road, I saw the robbers’ car crossed my way. They dragged me out and I was shot in the leg before they took away my car alongside the sum of N150,000.”
