At least 9 prisoners were hanged in Pakistan in the last three weeks. Since the de facto ban on capital punishment ended on 17 December 2014, at least 220 people, including twenty-five convicted terrorists, have been executed across the country. On August 8, Ghulam Shabbir, a resident of Jehanian, was hanged at the Central Jail in Multan. He was convicted in the murder case of Zafar Iqbal in 2000. On August 19 two death row inmates were hanged in two different jails. Amjad Ali was executed in Gujranwala’s Central Jail for murdering his friend Khalil Ahmad in July 1998. A triple murder convict was executed at the Central Jail in Sahiwal. Abdul Qayyum had shot dead his sister Sultana Bibi, niece Yasmin and brother’s wife Kaniza Bibi in 1999. Death row prisoner Zulfiqar alias Nana was executed on August 25 in the New Central Jail of Bahawalpur for murdering four police officials during an encounter in Yazman in 1997. He was sentenced to death in 2001. On August 26, two murder convicts were hanged in Karachi and Bahawalpur. Shahid Mehmood was executed in the Central Jail of Karachi for killing a woman and her daughter during a robbery attempt in 1998. Another death row convict, Tajammul Abbas, was hanged in the New Central Jail of Bahawalpur. He had been convicted of killing a woman after raping her in 2004. On August 27, a death-row prisoner convicted of murder was executed in Multan in the wee hours. As per details, the death-row prisoner Maqbool Hussain convicted of murdering six persons over old enmity in 1996 was hanged to death in Multan Central Jail. The heirs of the death-row prisoner met him for the time. The body of the prisoner was handed over to the family. On September 1st, two death row convicts were sent to the gallows in different jails of Punjab on early morning, Dunya News reported.According to details, death row prisoner Muhammad Ashraf was executed in the Central Jail, Sahiwal. Ashraf had killed Shahzad Fareed in 1994 in Chichawatni.
Death row convict Jumma Khan was hanged in New Central Jail, Bahawalpur. Jumma Khan had killed his mother-in-law over a family dispute in 2000.
