03 January 2020 :
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Rana Sanaullah has said that Pakistan would have to abolish the death penalty and would have to move towards reformation of criminals, Naya Daur Media reported on 1st January 2020.
In conversation with voicepk.net, the former law minister said that with the evolving worldwide consensus on the death penalty, Pakistan would sooner or later have to abolish the death penalty. Moreover, he called for the need to reform criminals, adding that torture results in condemnation not just from local human rights bodies, but also from international organizations.
In 2013, Rana Sanaullah, while speaking at the Quaid-e-Azam Law College, had upheld the death penalty and had said that because the death penalty was religiously ordained, it did not matter what its status was worldwide.
Rana Sanaullah has apparently changed his stance after having been recently arrested for a crime which is punishable by death under Pakistani law.
