QATAR: FILIPINO CONVICTED OF SPYING SPARED FROM GALLOWS

A Filipino convicted of espionage in Qatar had been spared from the gallows when the death sentence meted to him was commuted to life imprisonment, Philippine Ambassador to Qatar Alan Timbayan stated.
Timbayan stated Abdullah Chua Tan had been in death row for seven years in the past after being convicted for possessing paperwork of and pictures about delicate Qatari services — together with a navy camp. Timbayan stated, nonetheless, it was not made clear whom Tan was spying for. He added that safety was a prime concern in Qatar, particularly with the appearance of the Islamic State, or Daesh.
