26 March 2025 :
Hussein Hassan Mahmoud Ma'da, a soldier in the Somali National Army, has been sentenced to death by firing squad for the murder of Sergeant Major Shafi'i Mohamed Hansi Ali, a group commander, HOL reported on March 26, 2025.
Ma'da shot and killed Shafi'i in November 2024 after an altercation during a dispute involving Ma'da's sister.
The First Military Court convicted Ma'da for the murder, which occurred when he refused to surrender his weapon to Shafi'i, who had arrived at the scene with three other soldiers to stop Ma'da from assaulting his sister. Despite attempts to defuse the situation, Ma'da fatally shot Shafi'i.
The Military Prosecutor's Office brought charges after an investigation into the incident took several months. The court reviewed the case and approved the death penalty. Lieutenant Colonel Mohamed Abdi Muumin, a member of the court, confirmed the sentence.
