16 March 2017 :
James Eugene Bigby, 61, White, was executed. A Tarrant County jury sentenced Bigby to death in 1991 for the December 24, 1987 murders of Mike Trekell and his infant son, Jayson, 4-month-old.
On August 12, 2003 the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld Bigby’s conviction but overturned his sentence, saying that juries should have considered mitigating factors, such as mental illness, and the fact that Bigby had received shock treatment for mental illness 10 days before the killings. Bigby was also accused of killing Frank Johnson, 33, and Calvin Crane Jr., 38, shortly after killing Trekell and Jayson but was never tried for their deaths.
He was sentenced to death again on September 19, 2006. He was the fourth death row inmate to be executed in Texas this year and the 542nd in Texas since 1982. It is the 6th death sentence carried out in the United States this year, and the n° 1448 since 1977.
