(February 24, 2023) - Steven Lorenzo Sentenced To Death
Hillsborough Circuit Judge Christopher Sabella accepted a guilty plea from Steven Lorenzo, who said he wanted to plead guilty and be sentenced to death.
The death sentence was announced Friday morning.
Lorenzo long denied killing Jason Galehouse and Michael Wachholtz inside of his Seminole Heights home in 2003.
Lorenzo told the judge he wanted to change his plea because he believed the end result would be the same, regardless of a trial.
Lorenzo represented himself and declined to have an appointed attorney.
Steven Lorenzo, 63, White, pleaded guilty last year to murder charges for the sexual torture and murders of of 2 gay men, Jason Galehouse and Michael Wachholtz, both 26, in December 2003.
Co-defendant Scott Schweickert had pleaded guilty to 2 counts of 1st-degree murder in 2016 and agreed to testify against Lorenzo. In his testimony at Lorenzo’s hearing, Schweickert said he and Lorenzo had been planning to lure gay men from a bar and kidnap and killing them.
Lorenzo, who represented himself in court, fought for the death penalty -- and, in a bizarre statement to the court, said "the sooner I get euthanized ... the faster I can fetch myself a new body and come back again."
