March 20, 2025 - Oklahoma. Wendell Grissom, 56, was executed.
Grissom was put to death by lethal injection at Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester.
He was pronounced dead at 10:13 a.m., according to a prison official who said there were no complications.
Grissom was executed for the Nov. 3, 2005, shooting death of Amber Dawn Matthews, 23, during a home invasion in 2005.
Grissom’s accomplice, Jessie Floyd Johns, received life without parole.
At the clemency hearing, Grissom’s attorneys said he suffered from brain damage and alcoholism and had been a model inmate.
Kristi Christopher, an attorney for Grissom, said he took responsibility for his actions and expressed genuine remorse.
It was the first execution in Oklahoma this year, the 128th overall since Oklahoma resumed executions in 1990, the 9th in the United States this year, and the 1616 since the U.S. resumed executions in 1977.
