VIETNAM. PRESIDENT COMMUTES DEATH SENTENCES OF TWO AUSTRALIANS

Vietnamese President Tran Duc Luong

20 February 2006 :

Vietnamese President Tran Duc Luong commuted the death sentences imposed on two convicted Australian heroin traffickers to life imprisonment, Australia's Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said.
Tran granted clemency to Mai Cong Thanh and Nguyen Van Chinh, who were arrested in June 2003. Thanh was sentenced to death in June 2005 for attempting to send heroin stuffed into loudspeakers to Australia two months after Nguyen received the same sentence for trafficking heroin.
"I'm very pleased that the representations I and the Prime Minister and others have made on this occasion have borne fruit," Downer said.
