a Speedy trial tribunal in Rajshahi, Bangladesh, sentenced to death four people and gave life terms to six others for the murder of Khaleque at Dashuria in Pabna district. Those sentenced to death were Dashuria UP chairman Shariful Islam Tuhin (tried in absentia), Abdul Hannan, Amin and Bachhu.According to the prosecution, Shukur was shot dead in broad daylight in 2000 by rival groups of terrorists clashing for domination over the Sugar Mills at Dashuria. Khaleque, a local BNP leader, filed a case against the killers. Pressure was put on Khaleque to withdraw from the case, but he did not yield. Under the leadership of the UP chairman, Khaleque was shot dead on August 9, 2003.
A separate report from Jamalpur said the special sessions judge's court there sentenced to death young housewife Aklima Hossain Lipi and her illicit lover for the murder of her husband at Kazirpara village in Melandah district. The husband, Billal Hossain, was asleep on the night of April 10, 2003, when Lipi and her lover Sayeed hacked him to death in the presence his two minor sons aged 10 and 6.
In a third case, Mahbub Sheikh was sentenced to death in Narail for the murder of his wife in Kamthana village in Lohagora. The prosecution said Mahbub beat and strangulated his young wife Kohinur Begum to death following a quarrel on 23 September 2003. No further details were given.
