04 December 2025 :
A Dhaka court on December 1st, 2025 sentenced a man to death for murdering his wife in the Dakshin Keraniganj area of the capital after she failed to fulfil his dowry demand.
The verdict was delivered by Judge Munshi Md Moshiar Rahman of Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4.
The convict, Md Rubel, was also fined Tk 1,00,000.
According to the judgement, Rubel strangled his wife, Ria, with a scarf at their rented home in Pangaon Battola between 4 PM and 9 PM on 18 November 2021 after demanding Tk 50,000 in dowry.
He then left the body on the floor, locked the house, handed their infant daughter to the child’s aunt Hazera and surrendered to police.
Ria’s father, Motaleb, who filed the case, said he rushed to the house after being informed by Hazera and found his daughter’s body on the floor. Police prepared an inquest report at the scene and sent the body for post-mortem.
Investigating officer SI Julfiker Ali Sarker submitted a chargesheet after examining the crime scene, seizing evidence and reviewing the inquest, autopsy and viscera reports.
Rubel also gave a confessional statement under Section 164 of the CrPC. The court examined 12 witnesses during the trial.
In the verdict, the judge said the prosecution had proven the charges “beyond reasonable doubt”, adding that the defence claim of suicide was “not substantiated”.
He was sent to prison on a warrant of commitment, and the case file will be forwarded to the Supreme Court within three working days for mandatory confirmation of the death sentence.
