BANGLADESH: MAN TO WALK THE GALLOWS FOR KILLING WIFE

A tribunal in Bangladesh sentenced a man to death for killing his wife in 2008. The condemned convict is Abdus Salam, 33, of Dohokhola village in Ullapara upazila.
The court also fined him Tk50,000, in default, to suffer six months more rigorous imprisonment.
According to the prosecution, Salam strangled his wife Fatema Khatun, 25, to death following a family feud on November 27, 2008. Later, Abdus Salam set the body of his wife afire by pouring kerosene on the same day.
Golzar Hossain, maternal uncle of Fatema, filed a murder case accusing nine people. Police submitted chargesheet against them in 2011.
After examining the records and witnesses, Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Masudur Rahman handed down the verdict acquitting eight other accused as allegations brought against them could not be proved.
