EU HOPES MALAWI WILL COMPLETE THE PROCESS OF ABOLISHING THE DEATH PENALTY

18 November 2015 :

The European Union says it hopes one day Malawi will take the next step and actually complete the process of abolishing the death penalty. Speaking at a workshop organised by the United Nations (UN) and the Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) to solicit views on the death penalty, EU Head of Delegation, Marchel Gerrmann, hailed governments' re-sentencing of 192 prisoners previously sentenced to death, as a good move towards its abolition. In his remarks, Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Samuel Tembenu, assured the EU, UN and MHRC that government was working towards the abolition of the death penalty. The expert meeting on moratorium on the death penalty with a view to its abolition in Malawi was attended by members of the Civil Society, academia, government and the media among others.
