"It is a victory for the rule of law in Europe and a defeat for the Mullah's regime, that for too long has successfully exerted its political strength and blackmail, and to which Europe has too often submitted," Sergio D'Elia and Elisabetta Zamparutti, Secretary and Treasurer of the Radical Association Hands Off Cain, stated.Hands Off Cain has fought a long campaign for the decision made today by the Council of Europe, that cancelled the Iranian People's Mujahidin from the list of terrorist organisations.
"After six years of political, judicial, parliamentary and non violent struggle, we are happy to have convinced the Council of Europe to value rights against the real politik," D'Elia and Zamparutti said.
"However we must continue forward down the road of non violence, to change the fundamentalist and dictatorial Iranian regime. For decades the danger posed by the regime has been proven by the state of human rights and, in particular, by the terrible practice of the death penalty against minors and political opponents."
According to monitoring by Hands Off Cain, "in 2008 Iran, once again climbed onto the terrible podium of the first three 'Cain Nations' of the world. It was second only to China, with at least 319 executions, including 13 minors and two stonings."
"Now the international community is recognising and attempting to stop not only the threat to peace and to global security represented by Ahmadinejad, but also the daily threat practiced for decades by the regime in Tehran against its own people," D'Elia and Zamparutti concluded.
